Session Americana
Session Americana
Session Americana (Boston) is a rock band in a tea cup, or possibly a folk band in a whiskey bottle. This band/collective of talented musicians craft an musical experience unlike any other. On stage is a collapsible bar table wired with microphones, a vintage suitcase recast as a kick drum, an old Estey field organ, a pre-war parlor guitar, a mandocello and all of its smaller siblings, a harmonica case fire damaged when Jack's bar went up in flames and graffitied by Depeche Mode roadies, and an assortment of other instruments that get passed around in this freewheeling modern hootenanny. The anything-could-happen feel of a Session show depends on craft that's not accidental or easilywon; they bring a kind of ease and genuineness to this timeless music, sometimes presenting the latest batch of original songs, sometimes reaching back into depths of the American "song bag".

Session Americana is an absolute must-see, must-hear. Says David Greenberger of NPR:"I'd give them 100 miles. That is to say, if they're playing anywhere within 100 miles of your home, you drive there and are grandly rewarded for your effort."

Great Shakes, the new album from Session Americana with Jefferson Hamer, makes a bold statement for the Boston-area collective that has been playing together since 2003. Whereas previous albums have harnessed the sprawling
familial energy of the group, Great Shakes is a focused reflection of a six-piece version of the band that has been playing together sporadically for the past few years: Billy Beard (drums), Ry Cavanaugh (guitar), Kimon Kirk (bass), Jim Fitting (harmonica), Dinty Child (multi-instrumentalist), and Jefferson Hamer (guitar). While some of the songs on the record will be familiar to fans of the live group, the band also worked on new material together during their weeks-long sojourn in January 2016. Some songs fit together like jigsaw puzzles, with lyrics from one member and music from another, while other songs evolved through conversation and much experimentation. The product, scheduled for release in September 2016, feels more like the birth of a band than the seventh record of a collective.

Ali McGuirk
"A soul singer who evokes comparisons to Amy Winehouse but rocks even harder."- Steve Morse, The Boston Globe

"When she opens her mouth, people stop and take notice, captivated by her swooping, honeyed voice."
-Paul Robicheau, The Improper Bostonian

"A vocal powerhouse and smart songwriter."
- Jed Gottlieb, The Boston Herald

Ali McGuirk has made a career of captivating audiences with her unique blend of hypnotic R&B grooves, folk songwriter lyricism, classic soul delivery, and a gravelly blues temperament. With a focus on lively improvisation, strong instrumentals and her own buttery voice, her earliest years as a performer were spent earning residencies across 4 continents, from Santorini to Hong Kong.

In 2016, she was recognized on the cover of the Boston Globe Sunday Arts section as an "artist to hear," along with Lake Street Dive, Haim and others by the influential Boston rock critic Steve Morse. Shortly thereafter, she released her debut, self-titled EP.

In November 2017, she released her first full-length album, "Slow Burn," which saw her working with an eclectic mix of artists, including Boston guitar legend Jeffrey Lockhart (Lettuce, D'angelo, Lalah Hathaway), Brandon Mayes (Kendrick Lamar, Soulja Boy), DeShawn Alexander (Marcus King, Eric Krasno) and Cilla Bonnie (Air Traffic Controller).

"Slow Burn" was named as one of Steve Morse's Top Ten Albums of 2017, put Ali in the Boston Herald's list for "Best Music of 2017" and contributed to Ali's Boston Music Award Nomination for 2017's Best New Artist.
